Crossing Guards for Willow Lane Elementary

Crossing guard with stop sign and East Penn School District website & phone number

Dear LMT Resident,

Even if you do not have children in the East Penn School District (EPSD), you may be aware that for nearly a decade the Township has been administering the paid part-time Crossing Guard Program for Willow Lane Elementary School, which opened in 2010 offering bus transportation. The District subsequently decided to designate Willow Lane a "walking school" for students within a certain radius. While reducing the number of busing- eligible students, that re-classification also prompted formation of the Township-managed, part-time, paid employee crossing guard program, in response to the increase in students walking to Willow Lane Elementary.

With the assistance of the Township, specifically the township’s Public Works Department, implemented “walker-friendly” amenities. It soon became evident that our township was not the most appropriate administrative site for this education-support program, which included handling the full array of administrative and personnel matters ranging from hiring, training, supervision, payroll, etc., for about 15 guards, and assuming the legal liability for its operation. Starting in 2019 we informed the EPSD that we could no longer shoulder these mounting administrative responsibilities and that we were planning on a seamless transfer of it to the District. We recently learned for the first time, over social media, of its intention to replace the present paid, part-time guard program with an all-volunteer guard corps. The School Board at its June 27, 2022 meeting adopted a resolution to take over the guard program. We very much want to see a smooth transition (preferably in its current configuration) and to have it accomplished long before the beginning of the 2022/2023 school year, and continue to pledge our full support in the interest of the students, their families, the dedicated crossing guards, and the community at large.

If you have any questions, it is suggested that you contact the District; for its public meeting calendar; the general phone number is 610-966-8300, and the Board and the Superintendent can be reached through (610) 966-8333.
